Bristol Fighter F.2A and F.2B
The operational career of the Bristol Fighter began very badly; four out of six F.2As of No. 48 Squadron failed to return after an encounter with Manfred von Richthofen and his pilots on April 5th, 1917. The serious mistake had been made of staying rigidly in formation and relying on the observers to deal with the attacking fighters. After a time pilots began to realise that the 'Brisfit' was strong, fast and manoeuvrable, with the advantage of a 'sting in the tail', and they started to use their machines aggressively, like single-seaters.These tactics were immediately successful and many pilots and observers ran up impressive scores of enemy aeroplanes destroyed.
In the earlysummer of 1917, a modified version, the F.2B, appeared. Captain A. E. McKeever, a Canadian ace of 11 Squadron, scored most of his thirty victories on the type. A modified version of the Bristol Fighter served with the R.A.F. until 1932 - a striking proof of its excellent qualities. Three thousand one hundred and one of the type were built up to the end of 1918.-Three thousand one hundred and one of the type were built up to the end of 1918.
