The Macchi M5 was fully aerobatic and able to hold its own against the opposing Austrian land based fighters.   It was opperated by five Itailian maritime patrol squadrons as a fighter and convoy escort.     The Macchi M5 was flown by both US Navy and Marine Corps pilots.    Ensign Charles Hammann won the first Medal of Honor awarded to a United States naval aviator while flying the Macchi M5.
