CONTINENTAL MARINES 1779

Continental Marines Marching
The Continental Marines were founded by congress on November 10, 1775. While it was the intention that the Marines should serve on the ships of the Continental Navy, they were often utilized on land, serving in Washington's Trenton - Princeton campaign.
The green coats of the Continental Marines are believed to have been captured British uniforms intended to have been issued to Tory Provincials. The red facings were added, but the turnbacks were left white. They wear a white waistcoat, linen knee pants with white socks and crossbelts. Their unique hat was made by cutting down the brim of a black three cornered hat; binding the edges with white tape and turning it up on one side.
