The Black & Tans were named after a famous pack of hounds. They were basically mercenaries hired by the British Government to "Make Ireland a hell for rebels". They proceeded to make Ireland a hell for everybody. The "Tans" were ill disciplined and encouraged to act badly, which they did, shooting up towns and assaulting innocent civilians. They were one of the best recruiting aids for the Irish Republican Army.
