Protectorate Troops. Trooper, 1899 At this time Germany maintained a force consisting wholly of Europeans in South-West Africa. The uniform, established in 1896, was both practical and had a certain boldness and dash about it. Besides the grey uniform, which was worn at home and during the cooler season in Africa, the riflemen wore khaki drill uniforms with-for officers-a white formal uniform for the summer. In East Africa and the Cameroons, where the German troops consisted of natives under German officers, only khaki was worn, but with grey and white uniforms for the officers. In East Africa the grey uniform had white pipings and in the Cameroons, red. This figure can also be used as an officer or NCO for the World War One Schutztruppe in East Africa.
