(HT-3) Char D'Assaut Schneider CA1 1917 First French Tank Kit......... $20.00
Based on the Holt Tractor, the Schneider CA1 was The French Army's first tank design. The
vehicle had a large wire cutter at the front of its prow-like nose and tail skids at the
rear. Its 70 h.p. engine was mounted near the front to the left of the center line. The
maximum speed atainable was 5 m.p.h. and steering was by the clutch and brake method. On
short 75-mm gun was fitted in a sponson on the righthand side of the hull with one
Hotchkiss machine gun futher back on the same side and on Hotchkiss machinegun in the
middle of the hull on the other side. Ninety rounds of ammunition were carried for the gun
and 4000 rounds for the machine guns. Six men made up the crew, the officer in command
being also the driver. Early versions of the vehicle had the internal fuel tanks mounted
high on the sides and tended to burn quite easily when hit by German "K"
bullets. The armor on the vertical sides was 11.4 mm and in later versions was increased
by adding 5 1/2 mm plates to the existing armor.
