Next to the Rolls Royce series the Lanchester armored cars were the most common type in use by the British Army in the Great War. Twenty of these vehicles also served the Russian Army begining in 1915. The vehicle had a six-cylinder, 4.8 litre engine which developed 65 b.h.p. at 2200 r.pm.; the gear-box was three-speed epicyclic type and transmission was by worm drive to the rear axle. As an armoured car with about 8mm of armor, it weighed between four and five tons, the top speed was about 50 m.p.h. The crew consisted of three or four men and the armament was one Vickers-Maxim machine gun mounted in the turret, although a Lewis light machine-gun was usually also carried, stowed inside the car.
